Our First Trip to Washington

We've just got back from spending a few days house hunting in Washington. It was Rachel's first trip to America and Chris' first trip to Washington so it was good to have a look around the city and choose exactly where we wanted to live.

We arrived on Monday and picked up a rental car at the airport. Chris has never driven abroad before and the drive from the airport to the hotel along a 12 lane freeway was terrifying! It was dark and the middle of rush hour. What should have been about a 40 minute journey took us about 2 hours! We were relying on a crappy sat nav which didn't give us any warning when we needed to change lanes. I lost count of the number of times it said 'recalculating route' after we went wrong yet again! Chris managed to get us to about 50 metres from the hotel before I had to shout 'you're on the wrong side of the road!'. Eek!

We looked around quite a few apartments but have settled on an apartment in a town called Chevy Chase which is just over the DC border in Maryland. It's a big 2 bed apartment with its own swimming pool to help survive the hot summer months. It looks a bit like a 1960s concrete tower block from the outside but inside it looks much better. I'll put some photos of it on here after we've moved in. The area seems good and the important information is that we're about a 5 minute walk from Bloomingdales and some very posh shops on Wisconsin Avenue. When you see that the parade of shops consists of Ralph Lauren, Tiffanys, Jimmy Choo and Louis Vitton you know that it must be a nice area!

Once we'd chosen our apartment we had some time to have a look around the city. We got the metro into the centre and did all the touristy things like seeing the monument and white house. There is so much to see but we'll have plenty of time to see it all over the next few years.

I think we're both feeling really excited about it now and can't wait to get back there and settle in. We met up with Chris' new team at the embassy and they all seem really nice and made us feel very welcome so I think we're going to be happy here!
