AT&T National

At the end of June the AT&T National golf tournament was being hosted at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, this was the same club where we watched the US Open last year.  Tickets were cheap so we decided to go along to watch on the Saturday.

On Friday night there was a big storm due to hit the area.  It didn't start until quite late at night and apart from a lot of rain and a big lightning storm we didn't notice it being really windy.  It turns out that we must be quite sheltered where we live because when we walked out on to the street the next morning there were branches down everywhere.

There is a bus that goes from outside our apartment block to the golf course so we jumped on that.  It was about 6.30am as we wanted to get there early to see some play before it go too hot.  As we drove down the road we started to notice branches down and all sorts of random objects in the road and in front gardens.  Another 5 minutes down the road the bus had to stop because a tree had fallen and electrical cables were stretched across the street.

We then had a hilarious wait while the passengers on the bus tried to convince the driver to take a different route.  The poor driver was obviously not allowed to drive off route without supervisor approval but the passengers didn't seem to understand that.  The comments that they were coming out with were so funny, things were getting quite heated and we had all sorts of people offering to drive the bus their selves!  Eventually we decided to get off the bus and walk home and try to find a different route.  When we got back to Friendship Heights we found out that the golf had been cancelled to spectators for the day.  The storm was a lot worse than we had realised.  We're lucky living in an apartment block, we have a back up generator so we very rarely loose power.  We didn't have any tv or internet for a few days but there were thousands of people without power (and therefore air conditioning!) for several days.

We ended up going to watch the golf on Sunday instead.  It was unbelievably hot all day but it was still good fun. We almost got hit by a ball from Tiger Woods but it meant that he took his shot right next to us, I could smell him!!
